What a useful and charmingly written fiddling volume! If you lot're looking for a no-nonsense guide to the academic field of religious studies, every bit opposed to a guide to "religion" or to any particular religion--i.due east., a expect at the major theorists of faith from the Enlightenment to today--then you can't become wrong with this. The "boosted reading" alone is worth the cost of admission (especially if yous become it from the library like me). What a useful and charmingly written little book! The "additional reading" alone is worth the toll of access (specially if yous get it from the library similar me). ...more

Religious studies is more a survey or report of the major world religions and their beliefs and practices. There is an eclectic and interdisciplinary range of classical and contemporary social scientific theory that informs the bailiwick. This guide informs people new to and experienced in the subject field of classic and gimmicky theories and debates, including debates about insider vs outsider perspectives and the legacy of Christian theology and colonialism in the discipline. I idea the Religious studies is more than a survey or study of the major world religions and their beliefs and practices. In that location is an eclectic and interdisciplinary range of classical and contemporary social scientific theory that informs the bailiwick. This guide informs people new to and experienced in the bailiwick of classic and contemporary theories and debates, including debates nearly insider vs outsider perspectives and the legacy of Christian theology and colonialism in the discipline. I thought the give-and-take of classical theories was stronger than the chapter covering gimmicky. This is maybe because the former is a more established, cohesive 'canon' while the latter is nascent and still forming. A great book that's given me inspiration for months of reading and thinking. ...more

I like this well-written introduction. Herling provides an overview of major theories in the study of organized religion, organized to highlight issues of contend (and intrinsic interest), well-nigh the "location" of faith in relation to individuals on 1 hand and groups on the other, an almost the insider/outsider problem of assessing what counts as knowledge of organized religion. He as well gives a quick and helpful survey of new(ish) topics and analytical approaches in the field. The book begins, ends, and is inters I similar this well-written introduction. Herling provides an overview of major theories in the study of religion, organized to highlight issues of debate (and intrinsic interest), about the "location" of religion in relation to individuals on one hand and groups on the other, an virtually the insider/outsider problem of assessing what counts as knowledge of religion. He also gives a quick and helpful survey of new(ish) topics and analytical approaches in the field. The volume begins, ends, and is interspersed with bright illustrations of, and invitations to reflection on, why students might care well-nigh the study of religion. Not actually a stand-alone text, merely I can see it as a strong supplement to primary materials. ...more
